Join us on October 24 at 11 am for an update by Prof. Eli Noam on the new medical insurance system for retired Columbia Officers and ongoing negotiations with Columbia University Administration. He will recount the lengthy discussions with the Administration following last year’s abrupt and unfavorable changes. The Administration’s new plan—in the process of being unveiled shortly—more than quadruples the University’s contribution to many retirees, which is good news and a sign that we are being listened to. However, those retirees who have been outside the Columbia insurance plan system for more than five years are still excluded. Prof. Noam’s recent second report sheds light on this system, quantifies financial challenges, the substantial resources available in the Columbia University Retiree Medical and Life Insurance Trust Fund, and discusses the disincentives to retirement and the implications for the university and junior faculty. He will go over the report’s findings, identify options for improvement, and encourage a cooperative effort to enhance our retirement benefits and establish a more equitable system.
