From Teaching and Learning to Provenance and Repatriation: The Art Properties Collection at Columbia University

Roberto Ferrari, Ph.D.

Although Columbia University is the only Ivy League school not to have a museum, we have been collecting art and cultural heritage items for over 200 years. This presentation will provide an overview to the collection and its educational mission, with a focus on visual learning, and explore current work being done with regard to provenance and repatriation.

Roberto C. Ferrari is the Curator of Art Properties, based in Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, a position he has held at Columbia for over thirteen years. He holds a PhD in art history from the CUNY Graduate Center and is a specialist in American and European art of the long nineteenth century. He has curated exhibitions and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is the guest curator for the forthcoming exhibition Simeon Solomon: Queer and Jewish in Victorian London, opening at Delaware Art Museum in March 2027 and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in October 2027. The accompanying catalog will be published by Yale University Press in February. He has taught courses in art history at Columbia University, Drew University, and CCNY, and previously worked at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
