Professor Eli Noam in conversation with Professor Nadine Strossen
Join EPIC for a conversation between Eli Noam, Paul Garrett Professor Emeritus of Public Policy and Business Responsibility and Director of the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, and Nadine Strossen, John Marshall Harlan II Professor of Law Emerita at New York Law School and past National President of the American Civil Liberties Union. Their conversation will focus on the state of academic freedom and free speech: at Columbia, at other American universities, and in the media.
Professor Noam is an economist and scholar specializing in telecommunications, media, and digital technology. He served for many years as Professor of Economics and Finance and Garrett Professor of Public Policy and Business Responsibility at Columbia Business School, where he also directed the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information. He has also taught at Columbia Law School, Princeton, Penn, and universities in Switzerland, and has served as a Commissioner for Public Services of New York State and on the President’s IT Advisory Committee. A prolific author, he has published 38 books and more than 350 articles, and was a regular online columnist for the Financial Times. His award-winning research addresses media ownership, streaming and AI video, digital organizations, and digitized labor. He has served on numerous government, academic, and nonprofit advisory boards, and was a Fellow of the World Economic Forum. At Columbia, he chaired or co-chaired the University Senate’s Committees on the Budget, and on Benefits, as well as currently the Columbia Academic Freedom Council. Professor Noam earned his AB, AM, PhD, and JD from Harvard University and holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Munich and Marseilles.
Professor Strossen is a nationally recognized expert on constitutional law, civil liberties, and free speech. She served as National President of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1991 to 2008 and is now a Senior Fellow with FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.) A frequent speaker and media commentator, she has often testified before Congress and serves on numerous advisory boards. Named among America’s most influential lawyers and women, she has received many honors over the course of her career. She is the author of several books, including HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, she has delivered thousands of public presentations worldwide.
Professors Noam and Strossen are married to each other.
