Elizabeth Shane

Elizabeth Shane, M.D. is Professor Emerita of Medicine and Special Lecturer in Medicine and Attending Physician at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She served as Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine for Clinical and Epidemiological Research at Columbia University from 2010 to 2017 and as Senior Associate Dean for Student Research, Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City from 2017 to 2022. Her research focuses on various causes of and treatments for osteoporosis, and she has a longstanding research interest in the characterization, etiology, genetics and therapy of osteoporosis in premenopausal women. She has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and/or the United States Food and Drug Administration for more than 25 years and has served as Principal Investigator of many federal grants. She has served on several national and international committees, including the Advisory Council of the National Institute for Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. She was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and of the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. For the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, she has served on the Council, as Program Chair for the 2001 Annual Meeting, and as President in 2005–06 and as Chair of the Ethics Advisory Committee from 2015–19.
